When Richard Garcia retired from Government service after being the first Gibraltarian to be appointed to head the Civil Service, he finally found the time to devote to a life-long passion, researching and writing on the social history of Gibraltar. He has had 14 books published, some on Gibraltar’s social history, some on family histories, and others on Gibraltar philately. He is a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London and was appointed a member of the Academy of European Philately. In addition, he has written and presented two series of television programmes for GBC TV, one on the Spanish period of Gibraltar’s history and the other on the sieges of the 18th century. He has contributed many articles on Gibraltar to a number of journals in the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Gibraltar. He is presently the editor of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust’s Journal.
