The Gibraltar Garrison Library (Festival HQ)

The Garrison Library of Gibraltar was founded by Captain (later Colonel) John Drinkwater, author of A History of the Late Siege of Gibraltar, published in 1785 following the Great Siege of Gibraltar between 1779 and 1783. Having suffered a lack of good reading material during the siege, he realised the need for a good reading library which he saw as a means of saving garrison officers from ‘having their minds enervated and vitiated by dissipation’. The library how houses 45,000 books, including many rare volumes and an excellent local history selection.  The library hosts several festival venues and the green room for authors and speakers.
