What does it mean to be Gibraltarian? Is it something that can be readily articulated? Is it possible to speak about a Gibraltarian mindset and way of doing things? In this talk Gibraltarian author M. G. Sanchez will look at how Gibraltar has traditionally been represented in the past and argue that the majority of these representations fail to capture the unique character of the Gibraltarian people. Ignorance about the Rock’s native affairs, political bias on the part of journalists/commentators, even the tendency among some Gibraltarians to define themselves almost solely in oppositional terms -- all of these factors have helped to downplay the complex and fascinatingly hybrid nature of the Gibraltarian population. To round off his talk, M. G. Sanchez will focus on representations of ‘Gibraltarianness’ in his two latest books – the novel Jonathan Gallardo and the autobiographical volume Past: A Memoir – and explain how he uses different elements to try to create a distinctly Gibraltarian ‘text.’
